Aurora's parents don't let her leave the castle walls because of a secret curse that was put on her when she was born. Despite all their protection, Aurora pricks her finger on a spindle and the curse comes to pass – she sleeps for a thousand years. Rolly, back in the present, finds the sleeping Aurora and wakes her up. The two friends are reunited and Aurora gets to discover the world outside the castle at last! (For ages 5+)

Tsunami by Kimiko Kajikawa

This book is located at Corwin Campus library.

Kimiko Kajikawa based the character of Ojiisan on Japanese hero Hamaguchi Gohei, who in 1854 set his own rice-stack harvest ablaze, diverting the attention of revelers and drawing them away from impending disaster.
The collages are created by Ed Young, using rice paper, grass, marbled papers, and corrugated cardboard and various other media. Creating the sense of festivities, from pending doom then celebration.

The text is very simple, yet with the aide of wonderful collages, one is drawn along with the story, towards a happy ending, learning a powerful moral along the way.

The Omnivores Dilemma -Young Readers Edition

When I first saw this book in the MRC library, I glanced at a few pages and thought, I'm a vegetarian - why do I need to read this?
I noted a few weeks later the book has been recommended on a few 'lists'. Curiosity arose.

After reading this book, would you stop eating meat? Maybe not, yet I think you would look at your steak or chicken on your plate and wonder where it came from. Not all meat raised for slaughter is created equal.

Living in England, my Grandparents lived next door to an abattoir, or slaughterhouse. The animals came from the farmers' fields, to the sales then on to the abattoir. There were no mass feed lots, where cows were fed corn till they literally popped. Sorry ..... this book is not for the faint of heart. I suggest you not read it before your dinner. Unless you know where the food on your plate came from!

In a nutshell, Michael Pollan follows the components of a meal from the field to your plate. Some of the food items he follows are potatoes, Chicken McNuggets, mushrooms and even wild pig.

The biggest surprise for me was that potatoes must be stored for SIX months before they are made into your yummy french fries............

Did I become a vegetarian because my Grandparents lived near an abattoir? NO, I enjoyed all sorts of meat then. As for now, part of my answer is in this book.

New Books Are Coming!!!

We are expecting to receive our first big order of library books in a week or so. I've copied the list below; the title is on the right and the author (sometimes abbreviated) is on the left. This order includes books for grades 2 through 12; we will be putting in an order for Thunderbird sometime soon.

For this order I concentrated on filling in popular series we already own (such as the Twilight Zone graphic novels, and the Candy Apple books) and buying additional copies of books we can't keep on the shelves (Wimpy Kid books, Babymouse books). I also bought a few other items which promise to be popular, such as a series for high school students that's set in the "Star Wars" universe (series title: Legacy of the Force). And I'm excited to get The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which I read myself just recently and loved. Here's a link to a review by Debra Hopkinson (a noted YA author in her own right). By the way, we already have the sequel to Hunger Games, Catching Fire. The third book in the series, Mockingjay, will be on our next order (it was out of stock with our vendor this time around).

Please note it will take us a week or so to get our new order processed and on the shelves, after we receive it.

New Bone Books In the Works

Click above to read a great interview with Tom Sniegoski, who worked with Jeff Smith on the Bone prequel "Stupid Stupid Rat Tails" and the recently published "Bone: Tall Tales". He's currently working on a prose (no pictures) trilogy called "Bone: Quest for the Spark," due to come out over the next couple of years. Bone fans rejoice!

Volunteers Needed to Help Process Textbooks

Hi Everybody! The first day of school is rapidly approaching. Our new reading curriculum got here this morning -- five pallets worth! I'm looking for volunteers to help barcode the student textbooks next Monday (7/26/10) between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. I will have us all set up to work in building B, the cafeteria, on the Mojave River Campus. The End of the School Year Is Upon Us!

All library books were due in their respective libraries (MRC, Corwin, or Thunderbird) by the end of the week last week (June 4th). Please return any that are still out ASAP!
Seniors should be returning all textbooks directly to me, Mrs. Stockwell, in the MRC Library. I will be giving Mrs. Street regular updates about who still has books out. Seniors who still have books out will need to clear their accounts up before picking up their diplomas.
Any other student who still has books checked out after the end of school will be receiving a bill instead of a report card.

So please everybody get your books in!

More Book Fair News

Keep in mind that the library, and also most teachers, have "wish lists" posted at the book fairs, or "wish list" boxes set aside. If you are at one of the buy one, get one book fairs, consider using one of your "freebies" to get a book for the library!

I have now looked over 3 of the 4 book fairs (I haven't been at TBC this week) and there are some really great books available. At the Corwin campus this morning I saw that there are several books in the "Fancy Nancy" series for sale; I love these books! Nancy loves everything fancy, including words - which is a wonderful opportunity for some vocabulary development. They make nice read-alouds too.

It's Scholastic Book Fair Week at AAE! Each of our campuses is hosting a book fair. Here's the schedule:

7:30 AM - 3:00 PM Book Fair - MRC - Elementary Courtyard
7:45 AM - 3:15 PM Book Fair - MRC Campus -Patio Bldg. "C"
8:00 AM - 3:00 PM Book Fair - Corwin Campus - Auditorium

The elementary book fairs are all BOGO fairs (buy one get one of equal or lesser value for free), but the MS/HS fair is full price - but Scholastic books are very reasonably priced.
I've already taken a look at the MS/HS fair and there is a great selection, including several classics, lots of "pop" novels (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for one), and a good selection of current literary novels and nonfiction.. So go check it out for yourself!
A big thank you to the PTC for organizing and running these book fairs for us - It's a big job, and they work hard, all on a volunteer basis.

Check out this really cool blog (click on the post title above). It's mostly about books & stories (lots of reviews, links to free fiction, etc.) but has lots of other wierd stuff too: How about a video of William Shatner singing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as a duet with some guy from Taiwan? Truly amazing.

From what I have seen they keep it clean, but I would recommend it for HS & up.

Attention Seniors

The end of the school year is coming fast. Please, members of the Senior Class, take a look around and see if you have any textbooks, class set novels, or library books you are finished with, and turn them in. Also please remember that all seniors must turn their textbooks in directly to me in the library at the end of the year. Do not leave them in the classroom with the teacher; I will get them "home" in plenty of time for next year after we get them off your account.

Lone exception: any JAFROTC books must be turned in to Col. Armstrong.

LA Times Festival of Books April 24 & 25

Follow the link to get more information. The festival itself is free, but you can purchase a "panel pass" that gives you priority access to panel tickets for $30. The panels include such participants as Gordon Korman, Carolyn See, Neal Shusterman, Joseph Wambaugh, James Ellroy, Meg Cabot, Carol Burnett, Pam Munoz Ryan, David Shannon, Dave Eggers, Yann Martel, Michael Shermer, etc, etc, -- and that's just on Saturday. In addition to panel discussions there are lots of other things to do: dramatic readings, cooking presentations by cookbook authors, music, writing workshops, book signings, and more. And there are lots of things for kids. I'm going to try to get there both Saturday and Sunday, with or without family members - I hope I see some other members of the AAE family there also.

New AAE Library Blog!

This is the brand-new blog for the Libraries of the Academy for Academic Excellence at the Lewis Center for Educational Research in Apple Valley, CA. We will be using it to enhance communications between the library staff and students, parents, volunteers, and teachers and other staff members of AAE and the Lewis Center.
Quick introduction: I am Anne Stockwell and I supervise, and largely staff, the libraries for the Lewis Center, including all three campuses of the AAE, and our associated school in San Bernardino, The Norton Space & Aeronautics Academy (NSAA will soon have its own blog, this one is for AAE). My associate is Carol Stubblefield, who staffs and manages the library at the Thunderbird campus and helps staff the libraries at the Corwin and Mojave River Campuses on a part-time basis.
We're going to use this blog to keep our school community informed about what's going on in the library, including the arrival of new books, volunteer needs, upcoming overdue notice mailings, new "class sets" (sets of novels available for classroom use), etc. I would also like to include the occasional book review or recommended book list, and I would be happy if the members of our community comment on our posts! Just remember this is a school blog and can be read by students, including elementary ones, and we do reserve the right to remove any inappropriate or offensive comments. Thanks, and watch this space!
